The girls’ route saw a rather slow passage through Europe including being stuck in Poland for over a week, before powering through Ukraine and Russia. In Kazakhstan the team successfully navigated the Valley of Death and endured 6 hours detained in a Kazakh prison. Their journey was made more bearable thanks to the donation of some outdoor gear from GO Outdoors on 6th July 2009 in Oxford. Kit included a tent, sleeping bags, inflatable mattresses, camping gas, fold-up chairs, mosquito nets, water purification tablets and a tarpaulin.
23 year old Juliet Waud, a student from Sires Hill near Wallingford in Oxfordshire (currently studying at CASS Business School) and her friend Alice Paisley from Hanley Castle, near Malvern completed an epic journey to the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator last month after a gruelling journey in a Nissan Terrano 4×4 ambulance.
“I would like to thank everyone who helped for their generous donations. Go Outdoors gave us some great camping equipment. It all proved exceedingly useful and held up well in both temperature extremes as well as in the tropical storms! Although, sadly I left my sleeping bag on the roof of the car in Kyrgyzstan and drove off, not realising until 2 hours later…I had to replace it with a rather shoddy one I bought at great expense in Kazakhstan.”
GO Outdoors manager Martin Dix said, “Juliet and Alice have shown us what outdoor adventure is all about. They’ve had some amazing experiences surrounded by stunning scenery. We were delighted to support them. And congratulate them on raising such a significant amount for a worthwhile cause like Save the Children.”
