A young Coventry adventurer has been given a timely boost as she prepares for the challenge of a lifetime and takes part in one of the word’s most gruelling adventure races.
GO Outdoors on Coventry Business Park on Canley Road in Coventry is backing 24 year-old advertising account manager Kay Turner from Leamington Spa. The outdoor superstore has donated equipment including light, wicking clothing for her to use in a five-day adventure race in the jungles of Borneo in November.
Kay aims to raise £1,000 for Cancer Research UK by completing the race.
The Kinabalu Challenge features daily mental and physical challenges including running, cycling and kayaking – whilst racing against 14 other teams. The race kicks off with a helicopter drop off into the heart of the jungle where teams will be trained in jungle survival before embarking on the 5 day race. Team members must carry everything they need to sustain there time in the Malaysian Borneo, including a hammock to grab a little sleep during the race and a machete.
The finish line sits of top of the highest peak in South East Asia, Mount Kinabalu, more than 4,000 metres above sea level.
GO Outdoors store manager Scott Wallace said,
"Kay’s challenge is what the outdoors is all about. When she got in touch we were immediately impressed by her commitment and ambition. This is a huge test for anyone. Her training regime is rigorous and with a little luck, perseverance and determination I’m sure Kay’s team will do the Midlands proud."
Kay Turner said,
"I’d like to thank GO Outdoors for their support. This is going to be the biggest challenge of my life and everyone in the team needs all the help we can get! GO Outdoors’ equipment will hopefully help to make things a little more comfortable in the jungle.
"It’s going to be around 35 degrees and 95% humidity when we get out there in November. We’re even training on mountain bikes in the Sauna to help us cope!"
